Funny Story of Ferdinand Čatloš saved

When he arrived in his Fi 156 Storch the sun had already set so his pilot actually landed by mistake in a field right between the retreating Soviets and the advancing German and Slovak divisions on the outskirts of Rostov. So he went on foot into the city by himself not caring for the general chaos in the city that night.

There he encountered German soldiers cleaning up the city and because he wore a dusty coat he was at first mistaken for a Soviet high ranking officer. But after he explained he was ‘just’ a 1st class general and the highest commander of the Slovak Army and that he only wanted to be an example to his soldiers, everything was cleared up. He left quite an impression on the Germans who never saw such a high ranking officer and a statesman at that so close to the front line ..or directly on it.
